A Tribute to Stanley Tulchin
Stanley "Ted" Tulchin, founder and Chairman of STA International, passed away on Monday, December 19th, 2005. He was 79. A man of enormous generosity, wit, and charm, Stanley was regarded with respect and affection by all whom he encountered in the realms of business. Stanley’s enduring legacy to STA is its multi-national presence, a company equipped for the demands of the 21st Century, and capable of serving its customers for generations to come.
His passing leaves a great sadness in the hearts of all who worked closely with him. Stanley was a true example of a “Renaissance Man”. He was a successful businessman in the fields of banking and credit management, as well as an acclaimed theatrical producer on both sides of the Atlantic. He exemplified the virtues of hard work, perseverance, and determination to succeed, while retaining his innate gentleness and humility.
A native New Yorker, Stanley served in the Army investigations unit in Europe in World War II and its immediate aftermath. In 1955, he founded Stanley Tulchin Associates, the commercial credit and collection agency now known as STA International.
Stanley was a member of the Commercial Law League of America since 1955, and was twice elected to the Board of Governors. In 1975, Stanley was the recipient of the President’s Cup, the CLLA’s highest award. Stanley’s regular presence in the New York office, at an age when most have retired, was an inspiration to us all.
Stanley generously gave his time and expertise to nurture and develop the most junior of employees. He traveled regularly to STA offices worldwide, imparting the wisdom he had amassed over fifty years in business.
Despite considerable success in business and the theater arts, Stanley remained, above all, a very genuine and caring human being, characteristics that were as natural to him as his irrepressible energy and drive.
Stanley served on the boards of New Dramatists, Playwrights Horizons, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Topps Company. For many years an instructor and guest lecturer for the New York Institute of Credit, he was honored with their Leadership in Credit Education Award in 1990.
At a memorial held on Thursday, December 22nd (the day after Stanley and Pat’s 53rd wedding anniversary), many heartfelt tributes were paid in remembrance and celebration of the life of this special individual who touched so many lives.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy, sons Jeffrey and Steven, daughter Jill, brother Norman and three grandchildren.

Renaissance Man
Not content with his “day job”, Stanley founded Maidstone Productions in 2000, to devote himself to his greatest passion, the theatre. Known in the theatre world as “Ted”, he backed an eclectic selection of over 20 plays in New York and London, ranging from avant garde comedies to musicals.
His acumen led to an astonishing record of critical and box office successes: Pulitzer Prize winner Dinner with Friends; Trying, and Tony Award nominees Fortune’s Fool and Vincent in Brixton. Current hits include Sweeney Todd in New York and Guys and Dolls in London.
“Ted” was co-owner (along with his brother Norman) of the Playhouse Theater and the Savoy Theatre, both in London’s West End. Ted and Norman’s unique contribution to the London theatre scene will be a lasting legacy.
